Jeder, der zumindest ein paar der Klassiker der Jazz-Musik wie „So What“ von Miles Davis, „Summertime“ von Ella Fitzgerald, „Sing, Sing, Sing“ von Benny Goodmann, „My Funny Valentine“ etc. kennt, könnte wohl darauf schwören, dass er/sie alles oder zumindest ein wenig über Jazz weiß.

Doch die Welt von Jazz hat keine Grenzen. Bei vokal.total.2017 in der Kategorie Jazz werden diese geöffnet und über ihren ursprünglichen Lebensraum verlegt.  Wer hätte schon gedacht, dass sich Jazz in Taiwanesisch singen lässt! Auch wenn für Professionalisten wie die Jury wohl am meisten das schultechnische Können zählt, so wird vom Publikum nur Musik geschätzt, die Kribbeln unter der Haut bereitet und alle Sinne durchwühlt. 

 
Jazz oder nicht Jazz?
 
Bereits der erste Teilnehmer, die italienische Band „Alti & Bassi“, bietet mit ihrer Interpretation des Liedes „Va, pensiero“ („Flieg, Gedanke“) aus der Oper „Nabucco“ von Guiseppe Verdi Raum zum Nachdenken, was Jazz eigentlich ist. 
 
Wikipedia beschreibt Jazz wie folgt: 
 
„Der Jazz greift auf ein überwiegend europäisches Tonsystem zurück und verwendet europäische Melodik und Harmonik, musikalische Formen (zum Beispiel Songform) sowie europäische Instrumente (Blasinstrumente, Klavier, Gitarre, Kontrabass, große und kleine Trommel, Becken). Diese aus Europa stammenden Bestandteile werden im Jazz jedoch auf eigene Weise genutzt. Zentral ist eine besondere, auf Bewegungsgefühl bezogene Rhythmik (Swing, Groove), intensive, improvisatorische und spontane Interaktion (darunter Call and Response) und eine am vokalen Ausdruck orientierte Tonbildung. Diese Elemente, insbesondere die Rhythmik, lassen sich auf das Musikempfinden afrikanischer Musikkulturen zurückführen.“
 
Auch wenn nicht jedem die Ausführung “das Musikempfinden afrikanischer Musikkulturen” ein Begriff ist, ist es im Endeffekt auch irrelevant, wie viel Ahnung man selbst vom Jazz hat. Hautkribbeln ist garantiert. 
 
Für Ohrwürmer sorgen Lieder wie von Frank Sinatra „Let´s Fly with me“ und „Mas Que Nada“ von Sergio Mendes, wobei der Titel womöglich nicht jedem ein Begriff ist. Hört man den ersten Ausruf im Lied, so kann man nicht mehr genug vom Lied haben. Angenehm ist, dass man keine sonst allgemein bekannten Lieder hört, sondern sich immer wieder aufs Neue überraschen lässt. 
 
Gewaltig war der Unterschied zwischen den Sängern, die schultechnisch nach Jazz- sowie Gesangsrichtlinien, was offenbar der Jury sehr nahe liegt, vorgegangen sind und die einfach aus der Seele gesungen haben. Auch wenn der Gesang von der deutschen Band „Add One“ etwas außerirdisch geklungen hat, so war es emotionaler Höhepunkt und ein Gegenteil zum braven Schulmädchengesang, der mit den großzügigen Outfits der weiblichen Sängerinnen der niederländischen Band „The Junction“ im Widerspruch steht, die überraschenderweise den zweiten Platz belegt hat. 
 
Eindeutig zum Publikumsliebling des Abends wurde die georgische Band „Quintessence“ (dritter Platz). Mit ihren zarten 19 Jahren in Passionsrot gekleidet, zeigten sie rhythmische Fähigkeiten wahrer Profis. Stimmlich unglaublich begabt und zu sechst ein kleines Orchester. Wir hören von ihnen sicher noch viel!
