“Depression” ist ein so geläufiger Begriff, dass wir meinen, alles darüber zu wissen. Einige Irrtümer über diesen traurigen Seelenzustand halten sich jedoch hartnäckig.

Obwohl Depression die häufigste psychische Erkrankung ist, gibt es trotzdem viele Irrtümer, die mit Depression verbunden werden. Zum Beispiel geht der Irrglaube um, Depressionen ließen sich durch einen kurzen Urlaub heilen, was nur selten der Fall ist. Bei einer melancholischen Person könnte ein Urlaub die Depression noch verschlimmern, indem diese sich noch einsamer fühlt.

Mit einer depressiven Person muss man sehr geduldig sein
RICHITG – Einer depressiven Person kann es helfen, wenn Sie als Nahestehender Geduld zeigen. In Ausnahmefällen kann zu viel Geduld aber auch schädlich sein. Es bestünde etwa die Gefahr, dass die Person immer tiefer in ihre Depression versinkt und daraus nicht mehr herauskommen kann oder will.

Depressive haben keinen Appetit
FALSCH – Depression kann sowohl mit einer Verminderung des Appetits, wie auch mit einer erheblichen Vergrößerung desselben einhergehen. Ersteres ist zwar öfter der Fall, doch die Fälle, in denen Depressive während ihrer Krankheit übergewichtig werden, häufen sich.

Depressive brauchen einen Zeitvertreib
RICHTIG – Das ist jedoch gar nicht so einfach, denn Depressive zeigen kein Interesse für irgendetwas, nicht einmal für Dinge, die ihnen früher Freude bereitet haben. Wenn Sie versuchen, den Depressiven aus seiner Apathie zu holen, brauchen Sie sehr viel Geduld.

Reisen kann helfen
RICHTIG – Sich von einer Situation zu entfernen, die die depressive Stimmung ausgelöst hat, kann helfen. Alltägliches vertieft die Depression nur und der Ortswechsel auf eine bestimmte Zeit kann die Eintönigkeit aufbrechen. Verreisen muss die Situation jedoch nicht immer verbessern. Vor allem wenn man vor einem stressigen und ungeliebten Job flüchtet, in den man wieder zurückkehren muss, oder wenn man melancholisch ist und durch die Einsamkeit noch mehr ins Grübeln kommt.



Medikamente heilen die Depression

FALSCH - Bei schweren Formen von Depression kann zwar die medikamentöse Behandlung notwendig sein, doch eine Therapie ohne Medikamente ist vorzuziehen. Meistens werden Medikamente verschrieben, um die Symptome der Krankheit auf ein Maß zu reduzieren, das eine Thearpie und die Ursachenergründung erst ermöglicht.

Frauen sind öfter betroffen
RICHTIG – Laut Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) wird die Diagnose Depression bei Frauen zwei- bis dreimal häufiger gestellt als bei Männern. Dies kann mit unterschiedlichen sozialen Rollen und Zuschreibungen zusammenhängen, da deutlich mehr Männer an depressionsbedingten Suiziden sterben als Frauen. Der Grund könnte aber auch sein, dass Männer sich tendenziell seltener in ärztliche Behandlung begeben und seltener zugeben, seelische Probleme zu haben.  

Eine depressive Person könnte sich selbst schaden
RICHTIG – Eine depressive Person denkt öfter über den Tod nach als über das Leben. Eine Depression hat zwar keine suizidalen Eigenschaften an sich, doch sie kann zu einem Zustand führen, in dem der Tod als einziger Ausweg gesehen wird. Deshalb sollten Angehörige von Depressiven besonders aufmerksam sein. Das ständige Grübeln kann auch zu Konzentrationsverlust führen, was besonders im Straßenverkehr gefährlich sein kann.

Depression hängt mit der Jahreszeit zusammen
RICHTIG – Es besteht eine Form der Depression, die saisonal abhängig ist, die so genannte Winterdepression, die durch einen Lichtmangel hervorgerufen wird. Durch Lichttherapien können diese Formen der Depression sehr gut behandelt werden.

Depressionen können auch somatische Beschwerden hervorrufen
RICHTIG – Eine Depression kann soweit gehen, dass somatische Erkrankungen auftreten. Häufige Kopfschmerzen, Magenbeschwerden oder undefiniertes Unwohlsein können Anzeichen für eine Depression sein, die sich hinter somatischen Beschwerden verstecken.
